Impressionism was a nineteenth-century art movement that began in France. Originally used as a derogatory word to describe these works, Impressionism has become one of the most popular and enduring of styles.
Impressionist paintings captured the artist's immediate impression of the subject, often depicting day-to-day activities and suburban landscapes. Artists tried to accurately depict how changing light affected what they saw, and they painted outdoors – a technique known as en plein air.
