The Scottish Colourists

The Scottish Colourists were a group of four painters - Francis Campbell Boileau CadellSamuel John Peploe, John Fergusson and George Leslie Hunter, who worked during the first three decades of the twentieth century and breathed new life into Scottish painting.

The Colourists responded to new developments in painting in France before 1914 and brought the vibrant use of colour and painterly technique of Matisse and his followers to Scotland.
