Vanessa Bell, 1879–1961

Born Vanessa Stephen, Bell was a central figure of the Bloomsbury Group, along with her sister Virginia Woolf. Her paintings cover a wide range of ideas and styles – from early conventional works to the bold colours and abstract designs influenced by the Post-Impressionists and Matisse.

Although she had married Clive Bell in 1907, from 1916 she lived with the artist Duncan Grant until her death. They spent time in London and travelled abroad, but lived mainly at Charleston Farmhouse in Sussex, which is now a museum.

Prints of her works available on the Art UK Shop include a range of still lifes, portraits (including one of Virginia Woolf) and the strikingly modern Nude with Poppies.
