Degas, Edgar, 1834–1917

Edgar Degas was a French painter, draughtsman, printmaker and sculptor. His early works were mostly portraits or history paintings on classical themes, but he turned to contemporary subjects after meeting Manet, who introduced him to the young Impressionists. Degas famously painted ballet dancers, theatre and cafe scenes and women at work or bathing.
