Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens

Established in 1846, Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens now exists next to Mowbray Park, and is one of the city's most popular attractions. The art gallery features works by L. S. Lowry, who spent some time in Sunderland, Frederick Clarkson Stanfield, who was born in the town, and Tyneside painter Ralph Hedley. Modern artists include Terry Frost, Joyce W. Cairns and Michael Ayrton. The museum also houses fossils, natural history specimens and a large collection of Sunderland Lustreware pottery. The Winter Gardens are an enclosed tropical paradise with over 2,000 plants.
