‘Miss Clara and the Celebrity Beast in Art, 1500 – 1860’ mug and coaster
This matching ceramic mug and cork-backed coaster feature a vivid pink rendering of A Rhinoceros Called 'Miss Clara' (1738–1758).
‘Miss Clara’ is a small sculpture cast in bronze after a model by Peter-Anton von Verschaffelt (1710–1793). This eighteenth-century representation of a female Indian rhinoceros became an international sensation and was depicted in many different works of art including clocks and porcelain, as well as paintings and sculpture. She remains one of the most popular items in the Barber’s collections and is the focus of the exhibition ‘Miss Clara and the Celebrity Beast in Art, 1500 – 1860’, which runs from 12 November 2021 to 27 February 2022.
