Starting in 2018 and for ten years, the Government Art Collection has commissioned an outstanding British artist to create an original, limited-edition print to be displayed in diplomatic buildings across the world, with a small number available to purchase.
2017 Turner Prize winner, Lubaina Himid, is the fourth artist to be awarded The Robson Orr TenTen Award by the Government Art Collection. Born in Zanzibar, Himid moved to the UK as a child, where she studied Theatre Design at Wimbledon College of Art and Cultural History at the Royal College of Art, London.
Old Boat, New Weather continues Himid’s narrative on the legacy of maritime travel and depicts a collaged vessel, part-ship and part-shack in a European Harbour. Motifs familiar in Himid’s practice can be found in this image, referencing architecture, ships, slavery and imperial trade. The traditional tropes of painted seascapes such as the harbour, the impending storm and the boat itself are reinvented in screenprint through archive photographic imagery and woven colour.
Himid said of the idea that ‘the whole of history is in the harbour – but we know that this story will set sail.’

In 2019 Himid created the sculptural work Old Boat/New Money whilst in residence at Porthmeor Studios, St Ives, Cornwall, in a space once occupied by the painter Ben Nicholson. The limited edition screenprint, Old Boat, New Weather continues her narrative on the legacy of maritime travel. The barn-like structure on the trade ship was inspired by an encounter with the dilapidated homes of freed slaves in Caroline, USA and is reminiscent of an ark; a biblical symbol for a place of refuge. Patterns are common in Himid’s work thanks to her mother, a textile designer who frequently took her to see the designs at the Victoria and Albert Museum when she was a child.
For over 40 years, Lubaina Himid has actively encouraged the promotion and support of the Black Arts Movement, particularly work by women, curating a number of important group exhibitions throughout the 1980s and 90s. Himid currently lives and works in Preston and is Professor of Contemporary Art at the University of Central Lancashire.
