Satta Hashem was born in Buhriz, a city in Diyala Province, near Baghdad in 1959 and since 2000 has lived and worked in Leicester. Hashem’s work reflects his Iraqi heritage, using deep saturated colours to explore how art can make sense of life, death and war and the role of the artist in conflict.
His works weave a tapestry of current realities, mythology, tragedy and imagination with intense consideration of colour. The resulting portraits and compositions evoke the earliest depictions of the human face found in ancient Sumerian masks and temple plaques.
A World of Colour & Emotion: Satta Hashem accompanies the first retrospective of artist Satta Hashem at Leicester Museum and Art Gallery.
